The Cost of Overseas Pension Payments

Approximately 1.7 million UK retirees currently live abroad. 1.2 million are receiving state pension and approximately 600,000 have retired early and receiving private or occupational pensions. With a 2% annual mortality rate, approximately 34,000 overseas British retirees are likely to pass away each year. If these deaths go unreported, pension schemes risk continuing payments to deceased individuals.

The risks of fraud, overpayment or paying the wrong person increase significantly for overseas members.Reaching out to overseas members to ensure they are alive and well is a vital element of scheme administration. To mitigate these risks and with overseas mortality data unavailable, some pension schemes send letters to their overseas members asking them to complete proof of life certificates that must be officially certified in their country of residence. This is a very slow, time consuming and expensive process that generally has low response rates.

FAQ's

Q: Is this a scam?

You have been contacted by us as a genuine attempt to verify your identity for your Pension Scheme. This is to protect your Pension and Pension payments.

If you have concerns please contact your Pension Scheme directly. Their member services team will be able to confirm that they have asked us to help them and that we are working on their behalf.

Q: Why have you contacted me?

We work with many Pension Schemes who ask us to contact their members to verify that they are alive and well. They do this so that they can protect their members by ensuring that any payments that are due to the member are made to the correct person.

There are a variety of data services in the UK that can provide such checks automatically in the background but for members living outside the UK, it is necessary to make direct contact.

Q: I have never heard of the Pension Scheme you are working with.

This is not uncommon as some schemes operate under ‘umbrella’ names, or may have been merged with other schemes over the years.

It’s worth taking a look on the Pension Scheme's website to see if they are linked to a scheme that you have dealt with or recognise.

Q: Do I have to download an app?

A : This verification service does not require you to download an app. The entire journey can be completed in your browser. That could be on any phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.
